Description
Barley Seed 6677. Open Pollinated. Annual.
Barley may be sown like wheat but is more tolerant of soil salinity and drought than wheat. Sow in spring as a summer crop.
500 g sows approximately 70 m²
How to Grow
Sow barley no more than 3 cm deep. The best method for sowing is into furrows 20 cm apart, and rolled to firm soil over seed. Good seed-to-soil contact is required for any successful seeding. Begin with a finely prepared seedbed that is as free of weeds/debris as possible, then firm with a stiff rake or roller. If barley is planted late September to early October, it overwinters in southern Ontario, southern Quebec, Maritimes (not Labrador) and in BC. Germination takes 3-5 days.
When barley is sown too deep, yellow horizontal stripes appear across the first leaves. Planting too deep hinders establishment.
