Description
Espresso Sweet Corn 1572 (‘SE/SH2’ Bi-Colour Type) 1572. Hybrid.
Approx. 100-125 seeds/pkt (6 seeds/gram)
Espresso is everything a gardener is looking for – very refined large 22 cm (9”) cobs, 16 rows of bi-coloured kernels with a sweet, delicious flavor, strong tip-fill and good husk cover. Shows excellent cool soil and early season vigour. Perfect for those who demand great taste and quality. In good conditions, Espresso produces two cobs per stalk.
Espresso is a hybrid of Sugary enhanced (SE) sweet corn and Supersweet (SH2) sweet corn. Sugary enhanced sweet corn has increased tenderness and sweetness compared to normal sweet corn and maintains its qualities over a longer period of time. Supersweet sweet corn has enhanced sweetness, improved emergence in cool, wet soil conditions, and improved holding qualities.
How to Grow
When planting in rows, space the seed 10-15 cm apart, later thinning to 20-30 cm apart with the rows 55-75 cm apart. To ensure proper pollination, plant at least 3 to 4 rows. Corn can also be planted with 3 to 4 seeds per hill in hills spaced 30 cm apart. Plant 30,000 seeds per acre. Work in a good general vegetable fertilizer at planting, keep weeds under control and the soil evenly watered through the season. Sowing Temperature Guidelines. Sow only when soils have warmed to 18° C. Some years this happens in mid May, other years we need to wait until late May or early June.
Sweet corn flavour and sweetness are determined by pollen source. Isolate all sweet corns from all other non-sweet corns, including dent (field), flint (Indian), flour, and popcorn by 76 m (250 ft.) or by a 14-day difference in tasseling dates.
Isolation between other sweet corn varieties is also essential. Supersweet (sh2) and augmented (shA) sweet corn varieties must be isolated from sugary (su), sugar-enhanced (se) and synergistic (syn) types. If not isolated, kernels of both varieties will be starchy instead of sweet.
