Description

French Endive or Witloof Chicory Seeds 1495. Heirloom Vegetable.

Approx. 500 seeds/pkt (500 seeds/gram)

Grown since at least the 1840’s, this forcing variety will produce a dainty, delicate salad with a distinctive tangy flavour. Force roots in the winter to produce the ‘chicons’ of culinary interest. C’est magnifique!

Please note that the terms radicchio, endive, and chicory may be distinct or used interchangeably depending on regional cuisine.

How to Grow

Sow seed in early spring. In autumn when the foliage dies back, lift the roots keeping only those that are at least 3 cm in diameter at the top. Cut off the foliage leaving a 1 cm stub then store the roots on their side packed with dry sand or peat moss in a cool, frost-free place. To force the roots, plant upright in pots filled with sand or soil-less peat mix. Lightly water. Keep the pot in a dark place at 10-15° C. Germination occurs in approximately 2 weeks.
